The three Underwood compilations (1996-1998) and two Substantia compilations (1999-2000) were the best open windows on Sub Rosa's intense level of activity during that 5-year span. They gathered released, upcoming, and otherwise unavailable tracks.
Substantia was published in 1999.
Both Underwood and Substantia were attempts at touching the substance of our productions. Tracks were selected to develop a specific tracklist operating akin to a film in terms of dynamic structure, with an occasional trace of melancholia. The flowers came from a semi-environmental film we were showing at concerts. In the background is the sub rosa mobile we used in our frequent travels, an old Volkswagen about to fall apart. For me, these productions remain artworks in and of themselves, made from the production work we were doing at the time. The two Substantia albums (especially the first one) showed that same ambition. Then came the 2000s and we altered our course, exhausted and unaware of what would happen.
