If you ask me, this review could be wrapped up by merely pointing out the wonderful names of The Master Musicians Of Joujouka and The Gnoua Brotherhood of Marrakesh coupled with the fact that their new album is called 'Moroccan Trance II'. What more do you want?! Comprised of field recordings made in the Rif Mountains of Morocco back in 1995, the 'trance' being dealt with here is that of secret ritualism and spiritual discovery, with not a Day-Glo Gatecrasher knob-head in sight. Deeply moving and couched throughout with a palpable sense of age-old tradition, the music is split into two distinct halves, featuring a selection from each, which opens with The Gnoua Brotherhood's vibrant double reed and tebel drum drones and closes with The Master Musicians intricate group flute work. With extensive liner notes on the recordings and their histories, 'Moroccan Trance II: Sufi' is both an important aural document and a thrillingly visceral listen. Polite world music it ain't!
