(2008 - part two)

Paul D. Miller is a "conceptual" artist, writer and musician working in NYC. His work as writer appeared in The Village Voice, The Source, Artforum, Raygun, Rap Pages, Paper Magazine, and a host of other periodicals. He is, as well, co-publisher -with the African American poet Steve Canon- of the magazine "A Gathering of the Tribes" , words of the "multi-cultural". Miller was also the first Editor-At-Large of the cutting edge digital media magazine "Artbyte: The Magazine of Digital Culture." His personal work and artistic creations appeared in a wide variety of contexts such as the Whitney Biennial, The Venice Biennial for Architecture (year 2000), the Ludwig Museum in Cologne - Germany, Kunsthalle - Vienna, The Andy Warhol Museum - Pittsburgh and many other museums and galleries. But Paul D. Miller is better known for his work as "Dj Spooky that Subliminal Kid". He released under this pseudo a lot of music and collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Butch Morris, Kool Keith a.k.a. Doctor Octagon, Pierre Boulez, Killa Priest from Wu-Tang Clan, Steve Reich, Yoko Ono and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth a.o. His most recent album "Optometry" is a jazz project featuring Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Joe Mcphee, Carl Hancock Rux, Daniel Bernard Roumain and High Priest from Anti-Pop Consortium. "Modern Mantra" a mix CD of the Instinct/Shadow Records catalog was released summer 2002 in conjunction with"Optometry". He also published as DJ Spooky, articles and books. Such as his upcoming book, "Sound Unbound", which is an anthology of writings about sound, art and multi media, published in 2003 on Routledge Press.

"The material on this "Sound Unbound" mix is an audio essay that links artists as diverse as Marcel Duchamp, Vladimir Mayakovsky and Allen Ginsberg. It also foregrounds some issues that I think the 21st century really needs to understand - art isn't about objects anymore. Art is a continuous investigation into humanity's place in the world, it gives us hope and tells us simply, that another world is possible, I hope you listen to the mix and think about it as another kind of text. A text that asks a simple, yet deceptively complex question: where does the 20th century end and the 21st century begin? Where do we draw the line between art and objects, art and artifacts? The jazz musician Eric Dolphy once infamously said "when you hear music, after its over, it's gone, in the air. You can never capture it again." In the era of ubiquitous computing the new vision of music is about omnipresence - the music is everywhere". dj SPOOKY, New York, 2008
