Paulo Chagas was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, in 1953. He pursues his musical studies at the University of Sao Paulo as well in Conservatoire de Liège (Belgium) and at the Hight school of Music of Cologne (Germany). He has over the last decade composed several highly regarded instrumental and electronic works, which have been performed all over the world.
This latest unclassical creation was inspered by the misery found in the gold-rush settlement, Serre Pelada in the brazilian rainforest; thus, the title, which alludes to the anciant biblical city of Sodom. The complexe composition reflects the mix of cultures found in Brazil with elements of indian, african and european timbres (without forgotten the monophonic chant of the tora). Brilliant performance of Marianne Pousseur s' Helix Ensemble and the Tippett Ensemble directed by Celso Antunes.
Sodoma - a pièce for vocal quintet, 16 string instruments, 3 percussionists & electronic sounds.
